Picture of the Month

May 2002

This overnight fire occurred in the Spring Garden section of Pittsburgh in January 2001 and demolished 3 structures. The fire went to 4 alarms bringing 9 engines, 2 trucks, 1 RIT engine, 1 air unit, 1 safety unit, 2 battalion chiefs, 1 safety chief, 1 deputy chief, 1 assistant chief, and Chief of Department totaling 60 personnel. If this was your RIT standby view, what conditions do you notice? Where is the fire going?

If the attack crew presented themselves at the attic dormer window is the ladder that has been thrown to the 2nd floor capable of being extended to them? What type of basement windows are in view and is your team prepared to handle them? The glow of fire from the rear of the structure on the left side of the picture is a good indication for the RIT to do a walk around and check conditions in the rear. Remember, The RIT should try to keep several steps ahead of the fire in your planning. Always have a plan A, B, or C, and so on.
